Massage therapy is the scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of normalizing those tissues and consists of manual techniques that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, and/or causing movement of or to the body.
Noted physician Andrew Weil, MD, author of Why Our Health Matters: A Vision of Medicine that Can Transform Our Future and a longtime proponent of holistic medicine explains that massage offers "a variety of healthful benefits" and can enhance immune function, boost levels of endorphins and serotonin, and reduce stress hormone levels and blood pressure, all while easing sore and achy muscles. Now that's what we call an endorsement!
Research demonstrates that massage therapy can offer a variety of healthful benefits, especially for people with significant stress or anxiety, strained muscles, or osteoarthritis. Massage therapy can enhance immune function, increase circulation while reducing heart rate and blood pressure, boost levels of endorphins and serotonin (the body's natural painkillers and mood regulators), and reduce stress levels, while easing sore muscles.
Robinson Township Massage therapy can also provide relief of tension-related conditions, such as headaches and eyestrain, promotion of faster healing of soft tissue injuries, such as pulled muscles and sprained ligaments, in addition to reduction in pain. Proven benefits include: reduction of muscle tension and stiffness, relief of muscle spasms, aids in relaxation, greater flexibility and range of motion, relief of stress, and promotion of deeper and easier breathing.
What should you look for in a massage therapist?
If a therapist is nationally certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), he or she has at least 500 hours of training from an accredited school and has passed a written exam.
Another clue that the therapist is qualified is membership in a professional association that has established a certain level of professional preparation to join. These are the American Massage Therapy Association and the Associated Bodywork Massage Professionals.
